A Chinese Wedding and the Power of Taking a Chance
Since coming to China, I have often invited people, usually my students, to join me for different activities. Many times, they politely declined. At first, I felt rejected and wondered if they simply did not want to spend time with me.
Over time, however, I realized something important: most of those "no's" were not rejections at all. People were simply busy. They already had plans, appointments, family commitments, or other responsibilities that they could not easily change.
The moment I understood that, everything changed. I stopped taking it personally and continued inviting people without worrying about being rejected.
Ironically, I found myself in the exact same situation many times. Chinese friends and students often invited me to events, meals, and activities, and occasionally I had to decline. Not because I did not want to go, but because I already had commitments. Suddenly, I realized that we were all speaking the same language: "I would like to, but I can't."

Last night, the sister of a friend (who is my friend),decided to take a chance. She invited me to a Chinese wedding. It was a last-minute invitation, and it was already quite late when she asked. She may have thought I would say no. After all, many people probably would.
Thankfully, she asked anyway.
And I am so glad she did.
I had never attended a Chinese wedding before, so this was a completely new experience for me. The venue was beautiful, the atmosphere was full of joy, and the food was absolutely amazing. As someone who never says no to good food, that alone would have made the trip worthwhile!
But the most important part was not the food or the venue.
The most important part was that someone took a chance and invited me.

Had she decided not to ask because she thought I might be busy, I would have missed a wonderful experience and a glimpse into an important part of Chinese culture. Instead, I got to create a memory that I will always keep with me.
So thank you for inviting me. Your simple invitation gave me an opportunity that I might never have had otherwise.
I am sharing this story not only to thank you, but also to remind everyone of something important: opportunities often begin with a simple invitation. If we are not willing to take a chance, to ask, to invite, or to try, we may miss out on new friendships, exciting experiences, personal growth, and unforgettable memories.
Sometimes, all it takes is one person taking a chance.
