Exploring Campus Life at Henan University of Engineering Through Student Videos
When I taught a class recently, I was inspired by a video from a student in the USA who shared a tour of her university. It struck me as a creative and authentic way to showcase campus life. That idea sparked a project here in China with my own students at Henan University of Engineering (HUE).
A Collaborative Campus Tour
I divided my students into groups and asked each team to create a short video highlighting a different part of our university. The results were fantastic:
🎥 Dormitories – One group filmed both the male and female dorms, giving a glimpse into daily student life.
🌊 The Lake – Another group captured the peaceful beauty of the campus lake, a favorite spot for relaxation.
🍲 Canteen – Students showed the bustling dining hall where friends gather over meals.
⚽ Playground – A lively video featured the sports facilities, where energy and teamwork thrive.
🌳 South Valley Forest – This group highlighted the natural side of campus, a quiet retreat surrounded by greenery.
📚 Library – Finally, students filmed the library, the heart of academic life at HUE.
Each group brought their own perspective, creativity, and enthusiasm to the project.
Bringing It All Together
After collecting the videos, I consolidated them into one complete campus tour. The final product was posted on Youkuand YouTube, making it accessible to anyone curious about life at Henan University of Engineering.
Now, prospective students, parents, or anyone interested in studying here can watch the video and get a genuine sense of what our university offers. It’s not just a promotional clip—it’s a student-driven project that reflects real experiences and authentic campus life.
Why This Matters
This project was more than just an assignment. It gave students a chance to practice English, collaborate creatively, and share their environment with the world. For me, it was rewarding to see them take ownership of their learning and produce something meaningful.
And for future students, these videos provide a window into HUE—its dorms, dining, study spaces, and natural beauty. It’s a way to connect across cultures, just as I was inspired by that American student’s video.
