🎥📸 Capturing Campus Life at HUE: A Photographer’s Journey Through Memory and Friendship

I’ve recently rekindled a passion that’s been quietly growing inside me for years—photography. It all started when I got my hands on a Canon SX60HS, a camera that’s quickly become my favorite companion. With it, I’ve been exploring the corners of Henan University of Engineering (HUE),where I currently teach, and snapping shots around my condominium nearby.

If you’re a current or former student at HUE, this post—and the video I’ve uploaded to YouTube and Youku—is a nostalgic trip down memory lane. It’s more than just a slideshow; it’s a heartfelt tribute to the place where I’ve spent some of the most meaningful years of my life. I’m still teaching here as I write this, but one day, I’ll look back at these photos and remember the friendships, the laughter, and the quiet moments that made HUE feel like home.

🍽️ 01 – The Canteen: Where Friendships Begin

The canteen isn’t just a place to grab a bite—it’s where I’ve met most of my friends. I have a little tradition: I never eat alone. Instead, I approach students and ask if I can join them. Almost every time, they welcome me with a smile, and soon we’re chatting, exchanging WeChat contacts, and sharing stories over steaming bowls of noodles or rice. I’ve captured a few candid moments here—snapshots of connection and camaraderie.

🌳 02 – South Valley: Nature’s Hidden Gem

On the south side of campus lies a mini forest with winding trails that feel like something out of a fairytale. In winter, the trees stand bare, revealing the world beyond. But in summer, the foliage thickens into a lush green canopy, transforming the area into a secluded jungle. There’s even a spot that floods during the rainy season, forming a temporary lake surrounded by cabins and benches. I once tried to organize a student activity here, but the university didn’t approve. Still, it remains one of my favorite places to photograph—especially when the light filters through the leaves just right.

🌊 03 – The Lake: A Story of Resilience

Over on the west campus, there’s a tranquil lake that’s seen its share of change. When I arrived in 2021, it was covered in vibrant aquatic plants and flowers. But that same year, a heavy rainstorm flooded the city. While the university was spared major damage, the lake’s ecosystem was devastated. It wasn’t until this year, 2025, that the vegetation made a full comeback. I’ve taken some stunning photos of its revival—a testament to nature’s resilience.

🏛️ 04 – Administrative Building & Library: Icons of HUE

These two buildings are the heart and soul of the campus. The administrative building, with its grand architecture, has been the subject of many of my photos. And from my apartment in the nearby condominium, I have a perfect view of the library—a place of quiet study and endless knowledge. They stand as symbols of the university’s spirit and legacy.

🌹 05 – Flowers: Spring’s Colorful Symphony

Spring at HUE is a photographer’s dream. The campus bursts into bloom, with roses leading the parade. Their vibrant colors and delicate petals create a magical atmosphere, especially in the early weeks of the season. I’ve spent countless mornings wandering the gardens, camera in hand, capturing the beauty that surrounds us.

🧳 06 – Holidays: Moments of Departure

During long holidays—like the current National Holiday from October 1st to 8th—the university often adjusts the schedule so we can enjoy an extended break. I took the opportunity to photograph students as they packed up and headed home, their faces filled with excitement and anticipation. These images capture the bittersweet feeling of leaving a place you love, even if just for a short while.

📷 07 – Other Snapshots: Everyday Magic

Beyond these highlights, I’ve taken hundreds of photos across campus—moments big and small, familiar and surprising. If you’re curious to see more, check out my video on YouTube or Youku. Whether you’re a student, teacher, or alumni, I hope these images bring back warm memories and maybe even inspire you to explore your own surroundings with fresh eyes.
