Welcome to China
Today, an “welcome to China package” arrived from the Immigration Services. It not only conveyed a warm reception but also outlined the essential guidelines to ensure a smooth and trouble-free stay. Delving into the details heightened my sense of anticipation for this new chapter in my life.
Reflecting on the concept of feeling welcome, I'm reminded of the wise words my mom frequently shared: "A good place is where you are well." Since arriving in China, every aspect of my life has been flourishing. A rewarding job, a comfortable place to call home, and the opportunity to teach at a prestigious university have all contributed to my positive experience. From students to the faculty dean, the welcoming atmosphere has been pervasive.
A key factor in fostering this sense of belonging has been my proactive approach to making friends. I recall my initial efforts, inspired by my mom's wisdom, and it has proven to be a game-changer. China, I discovered, is a remarkably friendly country, and making friends here is surprisingly easy. The only caveat is that one must take the initiative. Nobody will approach you first, but once you make that effort, the warmth of camaraderie flows effortlessly.
In my interactions, I've observed that being the first to extend a hand in friendship is a universal truth. This insight has become a valuable lesson that I share with my students. By recounting my experiences as a foreigner who doesn't even speak the local language, I aim to instill confidence in them. If I can build connections in a foreign land, surely it's a breeze for them.
Undoubtedly, life is richer and more fulfilling with friends by your side. Personally, my continued presence in China can be attributed to the strong bonds I've formed. Having penned numerous articles on the art of making friends, I'm passionate about spreading this message. This piece is just one of many; feel free to explore my other writings and embark on your own journey of forging meaningful connections. After all, the world becomes a better place when friendship knows no boundaries.
